Wozu Image

(what’s the point of images/wherefore images)

CLE2017 Workshop: Warsaw 11 May, 13.45–15.45

Madeleine Campbell and Laura González

This two-hour workshop seeks to expand the themes of the Wozu Poesie exhibition[1] through intersemiotic translation and its body experience. The workshop will explore the relation between image and text, and what it means to put oneself in the picture. We will consider tableaux vivants, self-portraits, and artivism as methods to continue the series of images in the exhibition, paying attention to decision making, gesture, voice, and frame. Apart from a reading of Wozu Poesie images, we will introduce you to other artists working on the relation between text and image, such as Gillian Wearing and La Ribot. We will hope, by the end of the workshop, to provide some personal answers to the question ‘what is the point of images?’

Participants are asked to see as much as the exhibition as possible and to bring a red item into the workshop. If you have access to a mobile phone with a camera and writing materials (pens, pencils, markers), you should also bring those.

For further information please contact m.campbell[at]hw.ac.uk.

[1] First held in Berlin in 2013, this exhibition will be hosted by (e)motion, CLE’s Second Biennial Conference, Warsaw 10-12 May 2017, with thanks to Haus für Poesie, Berlin.

Call for Papers: “Intersemiotic Translation, Adaptation, Transposition: Saying Almost the Same Thing?”, 30 April, 2017

The first international interdisciplinary conference on “Intersemiotic Translation, Adaptation, Transposition: Saying Almost the Same Thing?” will be held at the University of Cyprus, on November 10-12, 2017. The conference aims at bringing together scholars from three different disciplines, Translation Studies, Semiotics, and Adaptation Studies, all of which look into intersemiotic crossovers. Join us in Cyprus to investigate common ground and divergence, as well as potential theoretical osmosis across disciplinary boundaries.

We welcome abstracts on textual transfer across semiotic systems, including ballet, opera, film and theater, comics, graphic novels and manga, photography and painting, video-games, website localization, hypertexts and multimodal texts, to name but a few.

Deadline for submission of abstracts: April 30, 2017
Notification of acceptance: May 31, 2017
Deadline for registration: September 15, 2017

Words, Brush-strokes and Dancing Shoes – a symposium on translatability across invisible borders

King’s College London, 11am – 5pm, Strand Building, Room S3.05
organised by Ricarda Vidal and Madeleine Campbell

A day of presentations, discussions and networking amongst artists, researchers, curators and translators working on intersemiotic translation. This symposium brought together a group of academics, translators, curators and artists, who have explored intersemiotic translation in their practice. It was an opportunity to present individual projects and research, exchange experiences and explore new partnerships and collaborations. We discussed what the group could do for intersemiotic translation, e.g. provide a framework for joint funding applications, international networks, or future collaborations between individuals/institutions, etc.

We would like to thank the Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries at King’s College London for sponsoring the event.
